Writing for ArtScope.net
General Guidelines For Freelance Reviewers
ArtScope.net (http://www.artscope.net), the online magazine for the visual fine arts, features reviews of art exhibitions and art-related events at Chicago's galleries and major museums. We welcome submissions from freelance reviewers.
Deadlines & Article Length
Most gallery exhibitions run for about a month. Many major museum exhibitions run longer. Any review for ArtScope.net is due in time for it to be edited and posted to the Internet with at least two weeks of the exhibition remaining; longer for major exhibitions.
Suggested length of reviews is between 500-1,500 words. Reviewers are paid 2¢ per word, paid on acceptance.
ArtScope.net reserves the right to edit reviews for clarity, content and length.
How to Submit
Reviews and other material should be submitted via email, with the entire text pasted into the body of the email. Send to editor@artscope.net.
Complete contact information for the exhibition must be included, including the exhibition's title, its rundates, the name of the gallery, the gallery's complete address including city, state, zip code, telephone number, and web site, and the gallery's hours.
Please also include complete contact information for yourself.
Rights, Linking, Reprints
By submitting a review, writers grant ArtScope.net first worldwide, electronic rights and agree to provide information for fact-checking, such as contact information for sources, copies of research papers used, reference citations, etc. as requested. By submitting material for publication a writer warrants that the material is not misleading or libelous, does not infringe on any copyright, trademark, service mark, trade name, or right to image or publicity, and that all necessary consents and permissions have been
obtained.
Writers are welcome to link to ArtScope.net reviews from their own web sites as long as ArtScope.net is fully credited for the review. For permission to reprint articles or reuse graphics, please write to editor@artscope.net.
Book Reviews
Writers: To Review a Book
In addition to art gallery and museum reviews, ArtScope.net also reviews art-related books. Most of the guidelines above apply to our book reviews. If you are interested in reviewing art books for ArtScope.net, please query the editor.
Publishers: To Submit a Book for Review
Publishers are welcome to submit books for review, and are encouraged to add us to their mailing list for seasonal catalogues of their art-related offerings. Advance proofs are also welcomed. Please include full contact information for your publishing house or publicity director with each book.
The types of books we review are non-fiction works pertaining to the visual fine arts, including selections on art history, art theory, art criticism, artist biographies, and exhibition catalogues. From time to time we also review how-to books on art as a business, books on the decorative arts, young-adult books relating to art, and books on photography. Past titles we have reviewed include Bright Earth: Art and the Invention of Color by Philip Ball, an in-depth look at pigments and their evolution over time; Rembrandt's Eyes, a biography of Rembrandt van Rijn by Simon Schama; How to Survive as an Artist, a book of business tips for artists; and Art's Prospect, a retrospective of art reviews by London Spectator critic Roger Kimball.
