There is a simplicity and intimacy, and yet, a masculine strength in these fourteen works in oil, whose superb handling of light and the technical challenges of difficult depths and surfaces, such as red peppers in a jar or the iridescent sheen of fish scales, show that Kryczka's striking realism employs as well a degree of expressionistic freedom that lends vibrance to the image. Several of these works present gamefish, their strong bodies still charged with vitality as they face the mortal realities of the cleaning board. In Fish (2004: oil on canvas: 31x31 in.) the steelhead trout commands the space, its sleekness and primal power a vibrant contrast to its situation. Other works evoke the silent, secret life of objects, whose stillness is filled with a resonance independent of the observer. Some insert a human presence, faded snapshots and pictorial clippings of World War II figures and the artist's own family.

Like the Dutch seventeenth-century painters, Kryczka presents objects for our seeing, both whole and complete within themselves, and infused with symbolic meaning. All combine the mystical harmony of still life with a matter-of-fact, everyday reality of memento morii. Marion Kryczka: New Work will be at the Fine Arts Building Gallery through November 27, 2004.

Visitors to the Fine Arts Building Gallery will also be able to view a concurrently running exhibition, Heavy Petting: The Painted Animal: New Work by Richard Laurent. Click here for more information.
