William Conger: Paintings 1958 - 2008
At the Chicago Cultural Center. Through March 29, 2009.

Rarely is it possible to see the evolution of an artist across several decades so concisely as in this excellent retrospective on Chicago artist William Conger, now on exhibit at the Chicago Cultural Center. Though including one work from 1958, the balance of paintings date from the late 1960s to the present, showing the artist continuing to evolve his singular combination of hard line in dynamic tension with depth-suggesting fills of gradated color. A beautiful consistency infuses these many decades of work, and at the same time, differing interpretations that never fail to please and intrigue. Sixty-three paintings and selections of initial sketches by the artist are on exhibit. Well worth a special trip. A full-color catalogue with essay, artist interview, and images of the exhibited works is available at the Cultural Center's gift shop. At the Chicago Cultural Center through March 29, 2009.
