Shen writes in her artist statement, "In my paintings, I use incense to burn the silk. The burnt holes suggest absence yet become the most remarkable marks. Burning represents an action of violence; by arranging the marks into a density, they become pretty auras." We now live in a world in which surveillance is widely used as both a deterrent and for social control. We have all seen these low res images and inevitably their narrative is not benign. So, when confronted with an image of an anonymous jogger in a park, or an individual with a backpack walking down a corridor, we become alert to a perceived threat. In a world where our safety has become color coded, these paintings toy with our senses, play with our conditioned responses, and their mechanical nature intensifies the pervasive chill of institutional voyeurism. peter miller gallery http://www.petermillergallery.com 118 N Peoria Chicago, IL 60607 312-226-5291 Thu, 10 Jan 2008 09:23:33 CST 1102008-2.html Announcement for FLATFILE http://www.artscope.net/VANews/1102008-3.html Event date: Friday Jan 11th, 2008 Opening at FLATFILEgalleries on January 11th, 2008, 5-9pm Sub-Conscious Loop with paintings by Rhonda Wheatley and sculpture by Lacey Pipher. This site-specific point of view is particularly apparent in compositional aspects of the work. Willis used framing devices such as odd angles, subtle shifts in color and bold patterns to reveal intimate knowledge of Chicago as a truly discursive place. Wesley Willis was a prolific Chicago-based musician and artist, who spentmuch time working and selling artwork in the streets. With a major cultfollowing in the 1990s, Willis recorded over 1,000 songs, toured frequently and sold out hundreds of venues across the city. Thomas Robertello Gallery is pleased to present Nowheresville, a multimedia installation by collaborative Cleveland based artists Hybinette and Richards. Taken from the literal definition of the word Utopia, Nowheresville focuses on the ideas and literary work of the French writer and Utopian socialist Charles Fourier: specifically on the experimental community, Ripon, Wisconsin, which was formed to put his ideas into practice. Ripon was a short-lived experiment but would later become the birthplace of the Republican Party. Presenting a historic trajectory that leads toward the near future, Ripon is portrayed as a Midwestern dystopia, infested by chaotic suburban drug addicts, killers, and societal decay. The centerpiece of the exhibition is an innovative video game created by Hybinette and Richards incorporating video, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, and cutting-edge technology. Deadtech is psyched to present new work by Chicago artist Chris Reilly! Chris brings the heat with a collection of projects based on political histories of control, information and death. The centerpiece of the exhibit is a full-sized, fully operational recreation of a guillotine, implemented with allegiance to contemporary ideals of eco-friendly sustainability. A windmill mounted out of the gallery window provides power to ratchet the guillotine blade into place, and release it automatically. To compliment this artifact of equal-rights execution, Reilly has included an automatic "text-redacter," which scans, censors and shreds documents in real time. Also featured in the show is a video piece interpreting the State of the Union address as an abstracted video and light event, and several smaller pieces that focus on Reilly's interest in paradoxical politics and guilt. Across global cities there exists a readable narrative in which similarities form a point of connection which spans geographical distance. In this series of video and interactive works UK artist Mike Salmond explores these cityscapes and their intersections through the similarities which render a place knowable yet different. To this end the threads in these images and visuals become part of a multi-layered narrative exploring global linkages, recording and memory; how we record only that which is different or unique to us. Traveling in these places becomes a performance of these points of intersection, both past and present. Gosia Koscielak Studio and Gallery http://www.gosiakoscielak.com 1646 N. A great pairing of two solo shows. Tim Vermeulen with Maren Erwin, recent BFA/SAIC. Paintings vs. Drawing, Male vs. Female.... Etc Tim Vermeulen The March of Time These oil paintings are small, figurative, autobiographical narratives. The 14 diptychs are based on the Biblical passage Ecclesiastes 3 (A time to be born, and a time to die, etc.). The paired thoughts of each verse become a springboard for a journey or pilgrimage inside the self. Maren Erwin Curiosities These meticulous ink drawings/collages are an imaginative response to mundane, everyday objects/symbols and how they instinctively evolve. The nonsensical can be questioned be rearranging these symbols into varieties of sequences. Actions and reactions collide beyond bodily constraint, leaving the moment vulnerable and silly and the end visual result is a satisfying surrealism. His multimedia paintings, sculptural installations, and photographs explore the formal properties of materials, the politics of identity, and the artist's personal history. Newkirk's use of hair pomade, plastic pony beads, neon lights, photographs and other materials deftly blends medium and message. Born in New York in 1970, Newkirk received his BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and his MFA from the University of California at Irvine. Solo exhibitions include "Kori Newkirk: 1997-2007" at The Studio Museum in Harlem. In 2004 he won the William H. Johnson Prize. Carl Hammer Gallery is pleased to present the masterfully crafted paintings and drawings of Marilyn Murphy in her first solo appearance here. Rich in meaning and paradox, her use of fire, floods, tornados, and air borne bodies characterize her fascination with all things that fly and all things mechanical. As such, the repeated use of images referencing her generation's childhood skillfully exemplifies a psyche always having needed to know how and why things work. Murphy's control with the paintbrush is equaled only by her superb drawing technique. And her bewitchingly surrealistic drawings are all the more compelling due to their eerie, enigmatic, fifth dimensional story-telling effect. She uses her body as a projectile hurling herself toward strong, vulnerable hominis-cum-receptaculi waiting to catch her. Perfectly poised in a perpetual state of social awkwardness and in full possession of the ability to subvert stereotypical gender roles, McElroy poses questions concerning relationships, social connecting, sex, gender, and the desire to form relationships quickly that are both intense and long lasting. The project initially started after Lilly placed ads on Craigslist.org looking for men who would meet her blind date style in bars and allow her to throw herself at them. Deadtech is psyched to announce "24 Hour Riot" an interactive video installation by Sabine Gruffat. Tasty refreshments will be served. 24 Hour Riot is a controlled demonstration of mediated upheaval. An interactive video installation emphasizes the problematic relationship between media imagery and political engagement by allowing viewers localized and temporary playback control of electronic noise machines and televised depictions of civil unrest within the hermetic space of the gallery. Viewers moving around the space randomly trigger a variety of dissonant electronic noises and in turn, incrementally provoke and effect minor disturbances in the diffusion of the video riot. Similar to the continuously archived news footage documenting uprisings worldwide, the ensuing outcry and dissonance of 24 Hour Riot is abetted and disaggregated by the technological conditions of its (non)release.
